Col William Russell, USAR (Ret)(R-PA-12) was running against Congressman John Murtha until Cong Murtha recently passed away following a surgery. Lt. Col Russell served in Operation Desert Storm as the Commander of a Mechanized Infantry Training Company in northern Saudi Arabia; during his tours in the Balkans he served in Southern Hungary, Bosnia, Croatia, and Kosovo. Both he and his wife, Kasia, who was 6 months pregnant, were in the Pentagon on 9/11 when it was hit by a hijacked aircraft; after seeing Kasia out of the building to safety, LtCol Russell participated in the rescue and recovery operations. During his tour with the 1st Infantry Division (I/D) in Iraq in 2004-2005, LtCol Russell served as the Division Force Protection Officer. Based out of Tikrit, he worked with the Commanders and soldiers of the 32 forward operating bases in the areas of operations, successfully preventing any car and individual suicide bombers from penetrating the base gates and perimeters. He also participated in squad level combat operations with the soldiers of the 1-4 CAV in Ad-Dallujah and served as the 1/D Liaison Officer to the 1st Marine Division during the battle of Fallujah in November 2004. Lt. Col. Russell's career spans over 28 years of service in the US Army, the Army Reserves, and the National Guard; he is the recipient of the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star.
